Applications of Maths: What's in the Courses and Where to Find Support

Most of us grew up with "traditional" Maths - algebra, trigonometry, equations and all the classic problem-solving. It's a great fit if you're heading towards a STEM-based career.
Applications of Maths takes a more practical route. It focuses on the Maths you use in real life: money, data, planning, interpreting information. It's a strong choice for students interested in health, business or the humanities, or anyone who wants Maths that feels immediately useful.
You're still working towards a full National 5 or Higher qualification, it's just a different kind of Maths, with a more practical feel.
National 5 Applications of Maths: building confidence with real-life skills
N5 Apps is all about real-life Maths. Students build confidence in areas they'll use in real life - whether comparing deals, reading charts, planning journeys or making informed decisions.
What the course covers
- Numeracy: choosing the right units, carrying out calculations, interpreting results and explaining decisions.
- Finance: Budgets, income, best-value deals, currency exchange and how interest affects saving and borrowing.
- Statistics: Comparing and evaluating data sets, interpreting charts, and exploring risk.
- Measurement: Scale drawings, navigation, packing, planning, time management and tolerances.
- Geometry: Gradients, composite shapes, volumes and Pythagoras.
- Geographical data & probability: Interpreting maps and graphs, and using probability to justify decisions.
How N5 Apps is assessed
- Paper 1 (non-calculator, ~39%) focuses on essential numeracy and clear reasoning.
- Paper 2 (calculator, ~61%) involves more open-ended, real-world problem-solving.
If N5 Apps is about confidence, Higher Apps is about independence.
Higher Applications of Maths: analysing, modelling and making decisions
Higher Apps takes the same practical spirit and pushes it further. Students move from "using Maths" to analysing, modelling and planning with Maths - skills valued in health, business, social sciences and many modern careers.
What the course covers
- Mathematical Modelling: Representing real-world situations mathematically, analysing models and using software to support calculations.
- Statistics & Probability: Probability, correlation, linear regression, data interpretation and clear communication.
- Finance: Present and future value, financial products, transactions and personal financial planning.
- Planning & Decision-Making: Project planning, weighing options and justifying decisions.
How Higher Apps is assessed
- Project (~32%) - explore a real-life question (e.g. a business or community scenario) and present your findings in a formal report.
- Exam (~68%) - both a written and a computer-based assessment testing how well you can apply, interpret and reason, using spreadsheets or statistical tools.
Higher Apps is a natural next step for students who enjoy practical Maths and want to develop stronger analytical skills.
